The exam, explained
The Trafford Consortium grammar schools are moving to a new entrance exam — the FSCE. It's a big change, so here's what's known so far, in plain English, from a tutor who specialises in it.
What is it
The FSCE stands for Future Stories Community Enterprise — the entrance exam the Trafford Consortium of grammar schools is adopting. It tests English and Maths, and possibly Creative Writing — though this has not been officially announced — and rewards children for applying what they have learned in the KS2 curriculum rather than for memorising facts or drilling reasoning puzzles.
It isn't untested elsewhere: the FSCE began at Reading School and has been used by a number of grammar schools and consortia across England. For Trafford, though, it is brand new, so some details are still being confirmed by the schools.
The schools
Five Trafford Consortium schools are set to use the FSCE: Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale Grammar School, Stretford Grammar School and Urmston Grammar School. You can read more on our Trafford grammar schools page.
How it differs
The FSCE is curriculum-based. It moves away from the standalone verbal and non-verbal reasoning of the old GL exam and instead focuses on English and Maths, and possibly Creative Writing, though this has not been officially announced. Children answer using multiple-choice answer sheets and short written responses, and the schools have said the change is partly intended to reduce reliance on intensive cramming.
What that means in practice: strong, well-understood fundamentals matter more than ever, and so does confident, structured writing.
The timeline
The current GL exam still applies for the immediate intake, and the FSCE is expected to become the exam for the Trafford grammar schools from a later sitting, with the test moving earlier in the year over time. Because the FSCE is new, the exact arrangements are still being finalised — we keep a close eye on every official update and adjust our programme as more is confirmed.
How we help
We are FSCE specialists based in Altrincham. Rather than a generic 11+ course, we run a dedicated programme shaped around the new Trafford exam as it is currently defined — English, Maths and possibly Creative Writing (not officially announced) — taught calmly, one-to-one or in small groups, with practice materials made to mirror the FSCE style. As the exam is brand new, we base everything on the published details and keep it updated as the schools confirm more.
